Counting Coins iPhone practical?

I had an idea to make an application that counts coins in an image, for this to be useful it would need to be able to count a fairly large amount of coins, and do it fairly quick.

Is this practical on a mobile device? Or will it take too long?

There is no yes/no answer to your question. The answer (as it often) is it depends.
It depends on the distance, on the number of coins, do they overlap and many such questions.

If you can get it to work in Matlab or on a desktop, and it's a single image processing, then it could probably be done on an iPhone, but the wait will be longer.
