When exactly should I use CALIB_RATIONAL_MODEL flag for camera calibration? How should I know that my lens has this kind of distortion?

Use google "CALIB_RATIONAL_MODEL" and you will find opencv reference book Learning opencv 3 p673 with an explanation.

You must use with exotic lens and number of grid images will grow
