Detect boxes and colors

Hi and thanks. I need to detect if a picture contains 0,1 or 2 boxes, box size (from a list of 4 different sizes) and it's color. The pictures are taken outdoor (different brightness on left/right edges). I need a hint and direction / recommended book.

Can you include a sample image and any code that you have tried?

Have you googled for "opencv rectangle detection"?
