How to handle inappropriate editing habits?

There are already several problems with the users of the Q&A site, mainly because the site format is different from the forum or mailing list culture. Among them, most frustrating seem to become:

So, what would be the policy to handle this kind of problems?

The bigger brother, StackOverflow, advocates for quick penalization, namely flagging/closing posts, motivating that as long as users with bad habits continue to receive answers, they will not follow the accepted rules. But if questions are closed (with a proper explanation), that will help them to follow the rules, for the common good.

I think a definite, enforced policy will help us keep the site clean, useful and interesting for all as it grows. Otherwise, it may become the next YahooGroups mailing list.

You have a point, I think using StackOverflow conventions is a good idea (IMHO) because they are tried and tested.

Agree. I think that better to delete by mistake a good question/answer/comment than to always leave the bad ones. If the question is important, it will be asked again, with all needed details and formatting. So, OpenCV team will try to create a set of [strict] rules and publish them. We'll probably invite the community when we have a proposal.

Any progress on this?

We have two updates.

  1. Now people can answer their own question if only their karma is 50 and more. We hope that it will help to avoid "chatting". But it also means that people (with small karma) can't provide answers for their own questions, we recommend them to add information about the solution to the original post.

  2. Now everybody (starting from karma 1) can vote. We'll see if this add positive dynamics to both good and bad questions and answers. We also need more adequate people with good karma to facilitate self-moderation on the forum.

So, let's check if these decisions are good or bad. We'll be able to change rules later.

I think that "flagging as duplicate/low quality" is needed as an extra to "flag offensive" in order to call moderators attention. Maybe it is not necessary to copy all the tools from SO as this site is still small, but I am missing this tool right now.

The flag duplicate will make possible to remove questions on the same topic and make it easier the search for users.

As a coment, IMHO, I think that it wouldn't be a good idea to copy the policy of SO regarding theoretical questions or tutorial-like questions with no codes (where they usually close them), as this OpenCV sometimes requires kind of tutorials or suggestions/discussions. OpenCV is not only programing related, is also researching, thats why I think discussions/suggestions should be admited (following the Q&A format, always argumented).

I think we should write some proposal of conventions for the site. Maybe there are volunteers for this activity? Also now some of you get moderator rights. Please use them for removing duplicate and off-topic questions, modification of questions and answers. I think together we can make this site better.

Also if you have any comments about content of about, faq, help pages feel free to send them to me. You can find my mail on code.opencv.org.

@sturkmen, yes if this helps us clean up the forum, then by all means do so. I will take a look at the deleted marked content and delete them if needed. As to the true answers, if you can provide me with the tag lists somewhere, then I might use those to make some wiki pages from them as a more generalized FAQ
